Celestite Mostly forms in small geodes. Its colour can vary from a very light almost grey blue, to deep mid blues as the image above shows. Hardness: 3 - 3½, Member of the Baryte Group. Named from the Greek "cœlestis," for celestial, in allusion to the faint blue colour. Occurs mainly in sedimentary rocks, bedded in deposits of gypsum and halite, limestone and dolomite.
